2. Dünya Savaşı sonrası ABD'nde Marksist bir yahudi olan Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand), bir radyo istasyonunun yanısıra değişik birkaç işte birden çalışarak yaşamını sürdürürken bir yandan da politik inançları doğrultusunda üniversitede ve sokakta aktif eylemlere katılmaktadır. 1930'ların başında okulda tanıştığı deniz subayı Hubbell Gardiner'le (Robert Redford) yıllar sonra tekrar karşılaştıklarında ilk aşklarının canlandığını farkederek birlikte yaşamaya başlarlar. Hubbell, Hollywood için çalışan ve McCarthyciliğin etkisiyle karalisteye alınan bir senaristtir. Olayların gelişimi iki sevgilinin duygu yüklü yollarını ayıracaktır; üstelik Katie hamiledir. |
