Yazar, araştırmaları sürerken ortaya çıkardığı gerçeklerle bir anda kendisini CIA'den silah endüstrisine, Beyaz Saray’dan Downing Street 10 adresine uzanan dehşet verici bir ağın ortasında buluyor. Buna paralel olarak da eski Başbakan, görev süresi sırasında, terörle mücadele adına, bir grup İngiliz vatandaşının gizlice CIA'e teslim edilmesine yeşil ışık yakarak, bu zanlıların işkence görmesine izin vermekle suçlanıyor. Hakkında verilen tutuklama kararı yüzünden giremediği İngiltere ve ABD’ye bol bol siyasi gönderme yaptığı filmi Polanski, İsviçre'de ev hapsindeyken çekti.
