Amacı; İmparator Meiji'nin askerlerini eğitmek ve silahlarının tanıtımını yapmaktır. Meiji'nin silahlarla donatılmış ordusu kalan son samurayları yok etmek için hazırlıklarını yaparken yüzbaşı Algren bir çatışma sırasında sakatlanır ve samuraylara esir düşer. Algren esir düştükten sonra samurayların lideri Katsumoto'dan onur ve savaş konusunda çok şey öğrenir ve iki taraf arasında bir seçim yapmak zorunda kalır.
