Onu yaşanan bir deneyim diye mi, yoksa bir entelektüel projeler listesi olarak mı yorumlamak doğru olur? Aydınlanmayı modernitenin altyapısını meydana getiren bir fikirler öbeği, modernliğin kaynağını oluşturan bir problemler ve tartışmalar dizisi olarak mı, yoksa esas, Fransız Devrimi’yle başlayan totalitaryen hareketlerin altyapısı olarak mı okumak gerekir? Aydınlanmayı olumlu bir biçimde ve bir kazanım olarak mı, yoksa olumsuz bir tarzda ve kötü bir efsane ya da musibetler kaynağı olarak mı değerlendirmeliyiz? Aydınlanma Felsefesi, on sekizinci yüzyılın Hume’dan Kant’a, Montesquieu’den Voltaire’e, Condorcet’den Rousseau’ya, Shaftesbury’den D’Alembert’e bütün büyük filozoflarını varlık ve bilgi, bilim ve din, etik ve politik teori bakımından ele alarak olabildiğince açık ve objektif bir biçimde yanıtlamaya çalışıyor.
