Yazar kitabın birinci cildini tanrılara, ikinci cildini de kahramanlara ayırıyor. Konuyla ilgili tüm bilgi, belge ve bulguları okurun görüşüne sunuyor. Bir mitin tek bir anlatımı ile yetinmeyip Yunanistan’ın farklı yörelerinde rastlanmış olan farklı anlatımlarına da yer veriyor. Mitlerin anlatımını Eski Yunan vazoları üstündeki resimleri inceleyerek yaptığı yorumlarla destekliyor. Kerenyi bu eserini geleceğin ozanlarına ve C. G. Jung ile Thomas Mann’a ithaf ediyor.
