Kaynağında sağlık sorunları yüzünden yapmak zorunda kaldığı ve bu vesileyle antropolojik, teolojik ve ahlaki yönlerini ele aldığı perhiz olgusu yatar. 1762’den başlayarak bu konuyu farklı eserlerinde düzenli ama dağınık ve dolaylı olarak işler. Vejetaryenlik onun kaleminde en temelde insani bir öğreti, “benzerimiz hayvanları yemeyi yasaklayan hayranlık verici bir yasa”dır.
