Nie; political scientist and entrepreneur; taught for many years at the University of Chicago; researcher on U.S. political behavior and public opinion whose creation of a software package to help him analyze data turned into a billion-dollar business that eventually was bought by IBM; died April 2, in his home in Sun Valley, Idaho; also had a home in Los Altos, Calif.; SPSS, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, eventually became a publicly traded company headed by Mr. Nie before it was purchased by IBM; grew up in St. Louis; after graduating from Washington University there, he went on to pursue his doctorate from Stanford University, completing work on it in 1970; came to the University of Chicago in 1968, becoming a full professor in 1977; he was twice chairman of the political science department, holding the post from 1985 to 1988 and again from 1993 to 1995; retired from the U. of C. in 1998 and took a post at Stanford; about that time, Mr. Nie co-founded Knowledge Networks, an Internet survey research firm where he was chairman; he was also the CEO of Revolution Analytics, a commercial software company)
