The wit and wisdom of Mark Twain, 2013 CIP introductory [editor's] note ("The quotations I've gathered here come from mining -- mining a 25-volume set of Twain's collected works and digging through (an anthologist's phrase meaning stealing from) some of the many fine collections of Twain quotations, most notably Caroline Thomas Harnsberger's Mark Twain at Your Fingertips: A Book of Quotations (Dover 2009). Some of his famous sayings ... he never said, at least not until someone else had said or written them first; some were recalled by acquaintances when he was dead and Twain then tended to hold his peace even when misquoted. I have included several apocryphal quotations, labeled as "attributed," when their pervasiveness in quotebooks might have made their exclusion here seem accidental")
