678 ## - BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL DATA

  • Biographical or historical data: Nanook of the North, as originally released by Pathé Exchange in 1922, was silent and ran approximately 75 minutes. In 1947 United Artists purchased Nanook and released a reedited sound version, running approximately 50 minutes. In 1960, control of distribution for Nanook passed to the Robert Flaherty Foundation, and International Film Seminars (IFS) assumed ownership of the film. In 1971, IFS asked film preservationist, David Shepard to locate and examine existing footage of the film in order to create the 1976 restoration (approximately 64 minutes), for which a new musical sound track was created. In 1999, the 1976 restoration was digitally remastered at the correct speed (now running approximately 79 minutes) and was released with a new musical track.
