The term ̀ẁorld economy'' covers industrialized areas in Western Europe, North America, and Japan. Since the 1960s, the Eastern bloc and the Third World were added to this definition because they have become more integrated into the world economy. In the author's view, the overall material well-being during this period substantially improved, and numerous less developed nations started on their path to industrialization. At the same time, global distribution of wealth and income remained less than satisfactory. Among the major factors affecting economic performance on the national level were economic reforms that led to direct governmental involvement in fiscal and monetary policy as well as other policies promoting growth and employment. On the international level, creation of the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, European Economic Community, Bretton Wood and other organizations, had a profound impact on world economy
